Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon
Huw David is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon based in Plymouth, Devon. He consults privately at the Nuffield Health Plymouth Hospital and his NHS practice is based at Derriford Hospital. Huw also undertakes regular outreach clinics each month in Kingsbridge, Launceston and Newton Abbot. Patients are drawn from across Devon, Cornwall and, occasionally, beyond.
Huw qualified from St George’s Hospital, London in 1982. His surgical training was undertaken in Bristol, London and Cardiff. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1987 and was one of the first trainees to gain the specialist fellowship in Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery (1993). He was awarded prestigious fellowships with Prof. Christian Gerber, Switzerland and with Dr. Michael Sandow, Australia. He was appointed Consultant in Orthopaedic and Trauma surgery in 1994.
Huw is a recognised specialist in his field and is highly experienced in arthroscopic (keyhole) and advanced reconstructive techniques. He developed the upper limb service in Plymouth and is now supported in this field by five colleagues. He has vast experience in all aspects of orthopaedic and trauma surgery including sports injuries and joint replacement surgery and remains active in both teaching and research. He has published widely in the areas of shoulder, knee and elbow surgery and his research has been presented at meetings internationally.
He developed the orthopaedic component of the Basic Surgical Skills course and has been a faculty member of the national AO fracture management courses and has taught on arthroscopic courses both locally and nationally including at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, London. Huw regularly provides training and lectures to general practitioners and physiotherapists. He is an Honorary University Fellow and Academic Tutor at the Peninsular Medical School.
